Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, emphasised the significance of these roadmaps, stating, “The roadmaps are the first detailed assessment of the key steps necessary to accelerate the transition to net zero by 2050. Together, they show a clear direction and will evolve as we dig deeper to set interim milestones on the way to net zero.”

These roadmaps extend beyond airlines, extending to governments, suppliers, and financiers, inviting them to play an active role in aviation’s decarbonization journey. Walsh continued, “The roadmaps are a call to action for all aviation’s stakeholders to deliver the tools needed to make this fundamental transformation of aviation a success with policies and products fit for a net-zero world.”

The roadmaps spotlight the importance of developing more efficient aircraft and engines, with a focus on advancing technology that enables flights powered by batteries, hydrogen, or 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The role of renewable energy in meeting the aviation sector’s energy demands is also highlighted, with key milestones outlined for infrastructure development.

Enhancing flight operations to reduce fuel consumption and emissions is another pivotal objective outlined in the roadmaps. This entails optimising flight routes, improving air traffic management, and implementing sustainable ground operations practices. Additionally, a global policy framework that incentivises and supports sustainability efforts in the aviation industry is underscored.

To achieve the net-zero emissions goal by 2050, substantial financial investments totalling $5 trillion will be required to fund advancements in technology, infrastructure, and operations. The roadmaps address the challenge of scaling up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, as SAF plays a pivotal role in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint.

As a crucial solution to decouple greenhouse gas emissions from flights, SAF offers the potential to contribute approximately 62% of the decarbonisation needed to meet the 2050 targets. Ensuring the quality and viability of SAF becomes paramount, with periodic testing utilising advanced immunoassay kits like FUELSTAT(R).

“Time is of the essence,” states Prof. Andreas Schafer, Director of UCL’s Air Transport Systems Laboratory, “Immediate action is required to commercialise scalable zero-carbon energy storage solutions along with the required infrastructure, and to build a business case for their rapid delivery at Gigawatt scale.”
